Gerald the giraffe longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny and his neck is too long. At the Jungle Dance, the warthogs waltz, the chimps cha-cha, and the lions tango. “Giraffes can’t dance,” they all jeer when it’s Gerald’s turn to prance. But with some sound advice from a wise cricket, Gerald starts swaying to his own sweet tune.
What a great book Mrs Derfi! We loved the story and the colourful pictures, but most of all we loved the positive message – you shouldn’t let others put you down or make you feel ashamed and that it’s okay to do things differently. Gerald soon learns that “we can all dance when we find music that we love.”
After sharing Mrs Derfi’s favourite story we created some of our own Geralds using gold paper for his pattern. They looked terrific. Mrs Derfi would be proud!
