Term Three and it’s time for Book Of the Year…

This term is normally all about Book Week and the books that are up for an award. But this year rather than look at each book, each year level has taken on one of the authors up for nomination.

The Grade Twos were lucky enough to get Aaron Blabey. His award winning picture books include Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, Sunday Chutney, Thelma the Unicorn and Pig the Pug. His book ‘The Brothers Quibble’ was selected as the book to be read for the National Simultaneous Story Time this year.

He has three more books due for release this year…Pig the Fibber, Piranhas don’t eat Bananas and the Bad Guys, which we hope to read to you. Pig the Pug is Aaron’s nominated book for Early Childhood Picture Book of the Year.

Aaron has been an actor, a painter, a grape-picker, a designer, an advertising copywriter, a video-shop assistant, a comic-strip creator, a college lecturer, a screenwriter and a picture-bookmaker.

pearl barley and charlie parsley notesHe loves being an author and illustrator because he gets to send his thoughts and feelings out into the world. The best experience is when he visits schools and sees how children respond to and embrace his books. He enjoys his job and he thinks he has the best job ever.

Aaron gets his ideas by being curious about everything. The trick he says, is to never, ever stop looking for ideas. He always asks himself “what would I really enjoy seeing on this piece of paper right now?”  His first idea for his first book came to him on an aeroplane flight. He wrote his ideas on his ticket and from there, Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley began…

Aaron Blabey’s picture books have a style and charisma all of their own. He uses simple language and simple illustrations and focuses on children and their relationships. His books confront the overwhelming fears and challenges of childhood with humour, and put them in a form that is comforting, understandable and funny.
